Dragon Boat Racing in Stanley

Picking a Paddle before heading out on the water in Stanley Beach

So I am now about to head into my 3rd week in Hong Kong and I've truly tried to immerse myself.  I've experienced the Hong Kong Sevens, I've photographed in and around Stanley, Central, Kowloon, Causeway Bay, among other places.  Oh, and the food...  Oh how I love the food.  Now, its time to experience Dragon Boat racing.  Not as a spectator but as a competitor!
My wife and I joined a Dragon Boat team and are competing on June 2nd in Stanley.  Today was the first in a series of practices and let me tell you, there is nothing like a couple of hours of intense paddling to remind you of how out of shape you are.  I will be ready for this race though so in between the weekly practices, I'll have to spend a little time in the gym and work on certain muscle groups.

If any of you have experienced Dragon Boat races, either as a spectator or as a competitor, I would love to hear your perspective on what its like and what to expect.

All photos were taken with the compact Sony RX100 II.
My wife is smiling but we haven't really gotten started yet.  Truth be told, she was still smiling afterwards :)
Our boat for this practice session...I've never done anything like this before but hey, why not try something new!

Wish us luck!!
